SKINNY MYTH: “Foods higher in calories and fat are more filling”
Myth.
It is a common misconception that foods containing high amounts of calories and fat are the most filling.
Since fat is energy-dense and leaves the stomach slowly it’s been long believed that fat is the most satiating or filling.
However, research shows that protein and fiber are actually more filling.
Let’s look at an example using a satiety calculator showing the Fullness Index.
The larger the value, the more fullness you get from each calorie
- One serving of Lay’s Potato Chips contains 150 calories, 10 grams of fat, and has a satiety value or Fullness Index of 2.
- One serving of Medifast brand Scrambled Eggs contains 100 calories, 2 grams of fat, and has a satiety value or Fullness Index of 17.
The difference comes from the combination of protein and fiber.
And there’s one weight loss program whose Fullness Index is 62% higher than the #1 Weight Loss Brand…hmm I wonder who that could be?
Tips:
- Choose Proteins which are the most satiating macronutrient.
- Choose Carbohydrates that have high water and fiber contents (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains).
